How the Russian Defense Ministry tricks mobilized men into signing contracts.

In 2026, the Russian Armed Forces ran into a problem: they were falling short of new contract recruits. And although the army is taking absolutely everyone, regardless of illnesses, drug addiction, and alcoholism, the plan for recruiting new contract soldiers is still not being met. To avoid getting chewed out, crafty colonels came up with a way to meet the quota using conscripts and mobilized men who are already fighting anyway. Both groups are motivated and pressured by different means to sign contracts: conscripts can then be sent into assaults, while with mobilized men it is simply moving a coin from one pocket to another, without affecting the number of new soldiers at all. But the crafty colonels do not care: in the statistics, a mobilized man is counted as a new contract soldier.

Mobilized men are usually pressured with the claim that those who do not sign a contract will be transferred to assault units, while contract soldiers can supposedly count on rear-area service.

The only problem is that the rear is already fully staffed, while assault troops are dying like flies, which is why the Russian Defense Ministry is forced to pull these contract schemes in the first place. So signing a contract has absolutely no effect on a mobilized man’s fate at all: he will still be sent into assaults to replenish losses.

This is described by Lieutenant Roman Sergeyevich Nechaev from the 145th Marine Regiment, military unit 52777. Nechaev was threatened with being sent into assaults near Kostiantynivka if he refused to sign a contract. But if he signed, then heavenly manna supposedly awaited him: an easy, dust-free posting in Crimea.

The outcome was predictable: after signing the contract, Nechaev was transferred to the 145th Regiment and is being sent into assaults. Nechaev, like someone swindled by thugs, has already filed an appeal with the military prosecutor’s office, but apparently understanding the futility of his actions, he is recording a farewell video: in the event of his death or disappearance, Major Stolbunov is to be held directly responsible.

A Contract Ticket Back to Assault

A mobilized soldier was promised rear duty after signing, then sent to assaults.

The new recruit existed only for the paperwork.
