Ukrainian negotiators suggested calling part of Donbas “Donnyland.” That was how they hoped to win Trump over, The New York Times has learned

Ukrainian officials proposed using that name during peace talks for the part of Donetsk region that currently remains under Ukrainian control, The New York Times writes, citing sources close to the negotiations.

According to them, one Ukrainian negotiator first mentioned the term “partly as a joke,” in an effort to win U.S. representatives over.

The term later continued to be used in the negotiations, NYT says, although it did not appear in official documents.

As the publication notes, the situation “reflects a global reality in which governments around the world appeal to Trump’s vanity in order to secure the support of American power.”
