The new, 21st package of EU sanctions is planned to include restrictive measures against the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, and ROC priests, Politico writes.

Previously, the Hungarian authorities led by Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who lost his post after the elections held in April, had opposed sanctions against representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church, the publication notes.

EU leadership, one of Politico’s sources said, believes that now is the right time to expand sanctions, since the situation in the Russian economy is “the worst since the start of the war,” and pressure on Russia should be increased.
