Russia and Syria have agreed to turn Russian military bases into joint training centers

According to the signed memorandum, civilian-use facilities, including Khmeimim Airport and the fourth commercial berth at the port of Tartus, will come under the control of the Syrian state.

The Russian military facilities, meanwhile, will be converted into joint training and advanced qualification centers, with the transition expected to take no more than three months. Syria’s Foreign Ministry said the agreement was the result of about a year and a half of negotiations.

🔵Russia has used the Khmeimim airbase since 2015 — it was one of the key hubs for the Russian Aerospace Forces during the operation in Syria. The military presence in Tartus dates back to Soviet times. In 2017, Moscow and Damascus agreed to station Russian forces at both sites for 49 years, until 2066.
