The New York Times: Ukraine proposed that the US rename part of Donbas “Donnyland” in honor of Trump

Four anonymous sources familiar with the negotiations told the outlet about this.

According to them, Kyiv made the proposal to the US president during peace talks in recent months.

The territory in question is an area where fighting is still ongoing, about 80 kilometers long and 60 kilometers wide. According to The New York Times’ sources, about 190,000 people currently live there. Other sources close to the talks say the real number may be roughly half that.

Ukraine considered, but did not approve, proposals for neutral administration of the territory or for a body that would include both Russian and Ukrainian representatives, on the condition that Russia would not be able to claim the territory after the war.

According to a source familiar with Ukraine’s negotiating strategies, a Ukrainian negotiator used ChatGPT to create a flag for “Donnyland” in green and gold, as well as a national anthem. It is unclear whether US representatives ever saw them.

So far, the proposal has not produced results for Ukraine. The term “Donnyland” continues to be used in negotiations, although it is not known to have been written into any official documents.
