In Russia, relatives of prisoners have begun being offered "torture insurance"

Izvestia writes that over the past several years, relatives of prisoners have started being actively offered contracts for "monthly prisoner insurance" against torture on social media and on specialized websites.

One of the first organizations to begin offering such services was the "Orthodox Center for Spiritual Assistance and Legal Protection," the publication found.

The organization calls the insurance "the only effective way to help a prisoner." Its website says the contract provides for issuing a policy to the convicted person and a copy of it to the head of the institution, and that in the event of injury, compensation can be received after an expert examination.

At the same time, the organization is not currently providing such services, but other "lawyers" and "law firms" are also offering this "insurance."

The Federal Penitentiary Service told Izvestia that "in the event of an emergency or injuries to a prisoner, if there is evidence," the damage will be compensated by the administration "in any case, regardless of whether there is an insurance policy."

In addition, the Federal Penitentiary Service clarified that a criminal case had already been opened in 2018 over this kind of activity involving the insurance of convicted persons.

Lawyers interviewed by the newspaper believe that offers of this kind are fraud, and that such organizations "make excess profits from relatives' fear for their loved ones' lives."
