In Moscow, police beat and took a schoolboy to the station because of an error in an AI system

At the beginning of May, two men in plain clothes attacked a 15-year-old schoolboy in Moscow's Lomonosovsky District, his father said in a conversation with Ostorozhno Media.

According to him, the attackers knocked the teenager to the ground and hit him on the back, neck, and stomach. After that they tied the teenager's hands and feet behind his back with a belt and shoved him into a car. The boy repeatedly said that he was a minor and asked them to call his parents. In the car, according to the father, they continued banging the schoolboy's head against the seat, tied his legs, and threatened to kill him.

At the police station, the teenager was interrogated and accused of distributing drugs. Two and a half hours after the detention, police called the schoolboy's mother and summoned her to the station. The officers told her that they suspected Misha on the basis of data from an artificial intelligence system, which had allegedly identified an 85-90% match with a person from a wanted notice.

In the end, after questioning, the teenager and his mother were released, and one of the officers cited the "human factor and the right to make a mistake," saying that such cases happen "because of working under conditions of staff shortages."

The schoolboy was diagnosed with a concussion and prescribed treatment. The medical documents also recorded a closed head injury, a hematoma in the area of the upper lip, bruising on the back surface of the chest, and multiple abrasions on both wrists.

The family filed a complaint with the police. In the agency's response, it is stated that during the detention Misha actively resisted, caused bodily injuries to the officers, and tried to flee, so physical force was used against him, including "combat hand-to-hand techniques." The family does not agree with this version.

As Ostorozhno Media writes, for four months the Investigative Committee has been sending replies saying that the complaint is under review, but the family has not been informed of the results.
