United Russia has proposed granting Russian citizenship to foreigners who were prosecuted for supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

Foreigners will be able to obtain temporary residence permits, residence permits, and Russian citizenship if they were “unlawfully convicted in other states for supporting Russia’s policy of countering neo-Nazism and supporting the special military operation.” Deputies from the United Russia faction will submit these amendments for the second reading of the bill tightening the requirements for obtaining citizenship, TASS reports.

At the first-reading stage, the bill provides that foreigners will be denied citizenship or a residence permit if they have an unexpunged or outstanding criminal record for any crimes.

“It will be necessary, additionally by the second reading, to consider those situations where we are talking specifically about the unlawful prosecution of persons in other countries precisely for supporting the Russian Federation, for supporting our measures to counter modern neo-Nazism within the framework of the special military operation. Therefore, the United Russia faction will propose, by the second reading, introducing additional procedures and rules that would make it possible to protect the interests of such persons,” said State Duma Vice Speaker Irina Yarovaya.
