First Confirmed Cases of Kenyan Mercenaries Sent to War

First confirmed evidence has emerged of Kenyan mercenaries being sent by Russia into combat after the possibility arose that they might be allowed to return home.

Ukrainian military intelligence identified one of the African fighters killed in the Kharkiv region as Nyambura Eric Mwangi (born March 25, 2003), listed among recruited Kenyan nationals. He arrived in Yaroslavl in October 2025 along with three others — Joseph Kamau Wanjiru, Joel Ngure Karithi, and Ronald Kipkurui Kibet — and signed contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Mwangi served as a radiotelephone operator but was quickly deployed to assault units. In early 2026, he was sent to the Borova area in Kharkiv region, where he was killed by mortar fire.

In March, Kenyan authorities reportedly secured a halt to recruitment of their citizens. Shortly afterward, 518 Kenyan nationals in Russian training camps were urgently sent to the front, allegedly to prevent their return home.
