A month after the oil spill in Tuapse, many beaches have not even begun to be cleaned up yet. Political, image-related, and material losses worry local officials more than the well-being of local residents and tourists.

A source close to the Ministry of Economic Development told Verstka that the task of “cleaning the entire coastline” is not even on the table. According to him, the plan is to clean up Tuapse’s central beaches, while problem areas with fuel oil will simply be fenced off. But in reality, these measures will not protect tourists from exposure to dangerous carcinogens.

Environmentalists explained to Verstka: fuel oil that gets onto pebble beaches immediately sinks deep inside. Even if the beach and the sea near the shore look clean visually, in the heat and under the sun’s rays toxic carcinogens will rise into the air.

While regional officials are trying not to lose their positions, volunteers are the ones cleaning beaches and rescuing animals. But the initial rush of volunteers willing to come from other regions quickly died down: after the May holidays, almost no one even remembers Tuapse anymore.
