Russian schools have begun warning students about the dangers of using VPNs

Russian schools have begun holding lessons on the dangers of using VPNs, Verstka noticed after analyzing posts on educational institutions’ VK pages.

On April 13, Irkutsk Education Center No. 10 published a report saying that, “as part of a month of anti-drug events and financial security measures,” “lectures on preventing the use of games and VPN virtual networks” had taken place.

The classes themselves were titled “VPNs outside the law. What you can and can’t do online now”, “Using a VPN is an aggravating circumstance when committing crimes,” and “Why gamers need to choose VPN providers carefully.”

At another Irkutsk school, No. 32, a similar class called “Ban on using VPN services: what you need to know?” was held on April 17. It again covered the risks of data leaks.

“Safe internet talks” were also held at School No. 81 in the village of Yulovsky, Salsk, Rostov region. During them, they “went over what personal data, a digital footprint, anonymity online, and the risks of using VPNs are.”

“The older children learned about articles on administrative offenses and articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. After all, as it turned out, the internet is the same kind of public place, where our actions (photographs, comments, videos) can turn out to be unacceptable and even dangerous,” the post says.
