Already 66 administrative cases and one criminal case have been opened in Russia for “promoting Satanism”

Novaya Gazeta Europe has calculated that since some so-called “International Satanist Movement” was declared an extremist organization in July last year, at least 66 administrative cases have been opened against Russians.

Reports are being filed under the article on displaying “extremist symbols,” mostly for posting pictures, photos, as well as audio and video recordings on social media (51 out of 66 cases).

Another nine reports were filed for public display, five for selling items with the corresponding attributes, and one for performing a ritual.

Most often, the publication writes, pentagrams and images of Baphomet are equated with “Satanic symbols.” In eight cases, Christian crosses were considered such symbols, and in several others, the number “666” and the inscriptions SATAN.

The most common punishment is fines of one to five thousand rubles, but five citizens were given arrest terms of 3 to 14 days. The largest number of reports for “promoting Satanism” were filed in Krasnodar Krai (at least 20).

The first criminal case for displaying “extremist symbols” became known in April. A resident of Voronezh has already been sentenced to one year of corrective labor in that case; the reason was the publication of a photograph of Hitler and a selfie in a hat and hoodie with a pentagram. Before that, a similar administrative report had been filed against him.
