You asked Meduza hundreds of questions about the war. The Explainers desk answers
When will the war end?
Only when both Russia and Ukraine become convinced that their goals have either been achieved or are unattainable. Putin’s goal is the seizure of Donbas. Ukraine’s is to prevent such a seizure. The Kremlin can hardly count on more than that. It has failed to destroy Ukraine’s military machine and economy, break its will to resist, or overthrow the “Kyiv regime.” There have been no breakthroughs at the front either. Putin clearly understands this.
The seizure of Donbas will increase the likelihood of the war ending, as will rising Russian losses if they reach a scale unacceptable to the Kremlin. Continued fighting after the battle for Kramatorsk and Sloviansk cannot be ruled out, but for now it looks like the decisive episode.
Throughout today, we will publish several of the most interesting questions about the war. The answers will appear here, in our Telegram channel.
