Russia warned Kazakhstan that it will halt supplies of Kazakh oil to Germany via the Druzhba pipeline

Starting May 1, Russia intends to stop exporting oil from Kazakhstan to Germany, Reuters and the Financial Times write, citing sources. According to Reuters, an adjusted oil delivery schedule has already been sent to Kazakhstan and Germany.

Kazakhstan has been supplying oil to the PCK oil refinery in the German city of Schwedt via the northern branch of Druzhba, which runs through Poland, since 2023. In 2025, exports of Kazakh oil through the Russian section of Druzhba amounted to 2.146 million tons (about 43,000 barrels per day).

A halt in supplies puts at risk a large share of the gasoline, kerosene, and fuel reserves from one of Germany’s largest refineries. Fuel from it powers 9 out of 10 cars in the Berlin and Brandenburg region, Reuters notes.

Kazakhstan’s Energy Ministry said it had learned about the possible suspension of supplies at the initiative of the Russian side from unofficial sources.

“There have been no official statements from the Russian side so far. But from unofficial sources, we know that this is true,” Minister Erlan Akkenzhenov said. According to him, the Russian side is citing the lack of technical capacity to pump Kazakh oil. “Most likely, this is connected to the recent strikes on Russian infrastructure. I am making that assumption,” he added.
