Wounded Russian soldiers record farewell videos before heading to evacuation.
At first glance, what is so unusual about that? It is obvious they may fear dying from their wounds. But here the issue is different: they are afraid their own side will “zero them out.”
In the video is Sergey Nikolayevich Podolsky, a rifleman from the 3rd company of the 218th Tank Regiment. After being wounded and losing several fingers on his hand, he tried to pull back to receive medical care. Instead, they first threw him into a pit, then pulled him out and kicked him back into the assault.
“They shoved me into a pit and started threatening to kill me, saying, ‘We’ll shoot you right now, kill you.’ I stayed there until half past six in the morning, after which they started sending me back”
Understanding that with an injury like this only death awaited him there, Podolsky decided to go to the evacuation point anyway. Since this is the Russian Armed Forces, where instead of helping a wounded man they can simply zero him out, he recorded a video just in case and asked for it to be published if he stopped making contact:“I fear for my life. They keep telling me, ‘We’re going to zero you out now, kill you.’ If I do not make contact within 12 hours, anything may happen to me, and my own people will do it”
