At a photo fair in Nizhny Novgorod, besides the works of documentary photographer Alexander Gronsky, the stands of “dozens” of authors were concealed, Agentstvo says

Three participants in the Contour.Photo fair, which is taking place from May 14 to 17, told the outlet this.

“On the night before the opening, people came with a list of names and demanded that the works be removed. Many artists were taken down,” a source close to Gronsky told Agentstvo.

Another participant at the fair confirmed this to the outlet on condition of anonymity: “Yes, quite a few authors were taken down this year. Fortunately, this issue did not affect my works.”

“Some galleries covered the works with tracing paper, some took them off the walls and turned them toward the wall,” a source familiar with the exhibition’s organizers and many of its participants told Agentstvo.

One of the outlet’s interlocutors from among the photographers heard that the “men in jackets” were FSB officers.

“The FSB came with a list, told them to cover them up, banned them from selling,” he said.

A source familiar with the exhibition’s organizers and participants told Agentstvo that he “overheard” that those subjected to censorship were “those who at the beginning of the war signed some open letter (against the war in Ukraine — editor’s note)” or publicly spoke out against it.
