Nothing at all, in the literal sense of that phrase.

There is neither any context for this statement nor confirmation that anything like it was actually said. FT cites not even American officials, but several people “familiar with U.S. assessments of the China-U.S. summit in Beijing.”

This game of broken telephone could have happened at least twice here: first, the Americans could have misunderstood or mistranslated the Chinese - we know perfectly well how the Trump administration handles interpreters; second, this is not a direct quote from Xi Jinping, but the Trump administration’s ASSESSMENT, retold by sources - and we know perfectly well what kind of assessments the Trump administration gives.

In other words, “American officials gave our sources an assessment that Xi said something along those lines.”

Okay. Clear. Very informative.

In reality, if Xi Jinping really wants Putin to regret something, then he will DO something to make Putin regret it.

So far, Xi Jinping is doing everything to keep Putin afloat.

That is the reality. Everything else is information noise, empty and devoid of any meaning.
