How Russians ended up in the army is not all that important, because you can only leave it either in a wheelchair or in a zinc coffin. Some think they can save themselves through SOCh. Of course, SOCh is better than being zeroed out, but the problem is that carrying out a successful SOCh is very difficult. Vast resources of cops, the FSB, and штабных шакалов are thrown into hunting down SOCh deserters, many of whom act irrationally and simply go home, to their wife or mother. Mediazona published a piece based on an interview with the captured SOCh deserter Anton Putyatov, who is ready to go to prison if only not to return to the war. But even that choice is not available to him: after being held in a camp for SOCh deserters, in conditions resembling torture basements, he and the others who were caught are sent back to the front, but now to penal units.

Instead of prison, Putyatov was sent back to the same 1435th Regiment, and the same company, that he had fled from. His fellow servicemen immediately beat him, took all his belongings, including the sock of his newborn son, which Putyatov carried with him as a talisman, and promised to zero him out during a combat mission. Not waiting for that, Putyatov went SOCh again, but there was no happy ending: he was caught once more.

❗️ So what is an ordinary Russian man supposed to do? The "I Want to Live" project has helped hundreds of Russians surrender safely. Everyone who surrenders through the project either returns of their own will as part of an exchange, or can remain in Ukraine until the end of hostilities in the comfortable conditions of a POW camp under the supervision of the International Committee of the Red Cross. No one knows that they surrendered voluntarily, so they will have no problems after returning. What is more, while in captivity they continue to receive their 300,000 in monetary allowance and may end up being almost the only living military millionaires to return from the war.
