Of course, in its brutality the Interior Ministry has not yet caught up with the Investigative Committee, the FSB, or the Federal Penitentiary Service, but the momentum and ambition are obvious.

Possibly, in the very near future torture will become a fully official sport in the Russian Federation.

And championships are not far off either, where operatives from the “power structures” will be able to compete in how deeply they can force a “client” onto a bottle, or in the number of fingers they can break during an interrogation.

And, of course, messing around with electric current, detainees’ convulsions, and so on will acquire procedural status.

But let us return to the innovations.

As became clear from the details of the smash-up of an innocent (not political) congress of urbanists in Voronezh, the people they rounded up were not only tortured with electric shocks, but also had their hair yanked out, were forced to lie in a shrimp pose, and were thrown around the room like sacks.

Then, of course, it turned out that the operatives had “gotten the wrong congress,” mixed something up, and simply threw all the detained and beaten people out of the police building in disgrace.

Derevsky writes that after that the силовики threatened him with imprisonment, tore out his hair, and threatened to shave it off: “They beat me, I don’t even remember how many times anymore. They threw me around the room. They demanded that I unlock it. They put me in a shrimp pose and told me to lie like that.”

In Putin’s Russia, however, this is exactly what will become the generally accepted norm.
