Ghana has officially accused Russia of recruiting the country’s citizens into the ranks of the Russian Armed Forces and sending them to war against Ukraine.

The African country’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa visited Moscow, where he held talks with Sergey Lavrov. Following the meeting, he told journalists that the Russian side had agreed to work toward resolving the issue of the illegal recruitment of Ghanaians.

Lavrov, for his part, acknowledged that Ghanaian citizens had signed contracts with the Russian Defense Ministry. Some of them, he said, did so “out of solidarity with a country that also helped them fight racism,” while others did so for “material and financial reasons.” In the Russian official’s view, “there is nothing unusual about that either.” However, Lavrov did not specify how many of them had been deceived with promises of construction or security work and then sent to fight in someone else’s war.

We know of at least 85 dead citizens of the country who signed and fought in the Russian Armed Forces. In total, we know the personal details of nearly three thousand Africans from 40 countries on the continent who signed contracts with the Russian Armed Forces. Of them, the deaths of nearly every sixth have been confirmed.
