Tuva native Andzhigash tried twice to escape from the Russian army. The first time was from the 90th Tank Regiment, practically immediately after signing the contract. The Russian army, to put it mildly, did not live up to his expectations. The guy spent several days at the training ground and went AWOL. He hid at home for a year until he was arrested. He flatly refused to return to the war and preferred prison to the army for desertion.

In prison, naturally, Andzhigash was not allowed to calmly serve out his due sentence. He was literally forced to sign a contract again.

“They have special convicts for this. They start breaking you, pressuring you, beating you. That’s how they make you sign the contract,” the prisoner of war says.

On his first combat mission, Andzhigash was supposed to entrench himself at the designated position. He sat there from February to May(!). Over time, provisions were delivered less and less often, and command stopped getting in touch altogether. When the hapless stormtrooper realized that he had been abandoned, he surrendered to fighters of the 80th Air Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He flatly refuses to go in an exchange.

“Anyway, when I get there, they’ll either send me back again or kill me,” and he is absolutely right! A grim fate awaits “AWOLers” in the Russian army. Only our project can help guarantee avoiding it.
