Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov told journalists that the detention of executives at the Eksmo publishing house in the case over the sale of queer literature “is not on the president’s agenda” (quote according to TASS).

According to the Kremlin representative, this is “rather a matter for law enforcement agencies.”

The criminal case on “extremism” over queer literature was opened in 2025 against employees of the publishing houses Popcorn Books and Individuum. Several people were placed under house arrest. Popcorn Books announced it was closing in early 2026.

On April 21, as part of this case, several top managers of Eksmo, including the publishing house’s CEO Yevgeny Kapyev, were detained for questioning. TASS, citing sources, reported that testimony against them had been given by employees of Popcorn Books and Individuum who are defendants in the “extremism” case.
