Russian troops bypass Starlink blocks using front Ukrainian citizens
Russian army troops continue to use Starlink terminals that are formally “blocked,” Verstka found after speaking with contract soldiers and sellers of Elon Musk’s company’s devices.
Despite requirements introduced by the Ukrainian authorities for mandatory verification of all devices, Starlink sellers have found ways to bypass the restrictions. To do this, they use “drops” — Ukrainian citizens who, for money, are willing to register a terminal in their own name and hand it over to Russian troops.
The devices are first delivered to Ukraine for verification and activation. For this, individuals or legal entities from Ukraine — “drops” — register the terminals in their own names. After that, the Starlink is sent by mail to another person inside the country for the terminal’s subsequent delivery to Moscow. According to one seller, Starlinks are sent to Russia via Europe or Crimea.
