Captivity is better than going AWOL

Probably almost everyone who ends up in the Russian army and in assault units sooner or later realizes that death or mutilation is inevitable.

Some accept this reality fatalistically and in the end turn into a “hero’s desk” at their school. Those who are smarter and want to live start looking for ways to escape this hell. They have very few options:

▫️Get discharged on health grounds

▫️Go to prison

▫️Go AWOL

▫️Surrender into captivity

The only legal route is discharge by decision of a military medical board. But in the Russian Armed Forces they may refuse to assign category “D” even if a person has no arm. Despite wounds and health condition, you will still be sent into assaults as part of “special units” - “cripple regiments.”

Prison is also a dubious option. You can read the stories of those who are literally trying to get themselves sent to prison from the front, but in the end are thrown back into assaults again.
