Fighters from the “L/DPR” units are abandoned soldiers of Russia’s army. They are second-rate prisoners of war for the Russian Ministry of Defense. They are almost never requested for exchanges. Moreover, their return is refused even when Ukraine offers to take them back.

Alexander Ageyev, like many other residents of Ukraine’s occupied territories, was forcibly conscripted to serve in the Russian army and sent to war against his own people. The first time he was in captivity, he spent only a few months there; however, after the exchange he was again sent to the same section of the front. He was lucky not to die in yet another nameless tree line, and instead ended up in captivity again, where he has now spent year after year waiting for an exchange.
