Zelensky Called the Proposal to Grant Ukraine the Status of an "Associated Member" of the EU "Unfair"This is stated in a letter the Ukrainian president sent to European leaders. Reuters has reviewed it.

"It would be unfair if Ukraine were present in the European Union but remained voiceless. Now is the most appropriate time to move forward toward Ukraine's full and meaningful membership in the EU," Volodymyr Zelensky noted.

Earlier, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz proposed temporary "associated membership" for Ukraine in the EU. It would mean Kyiv having representation in the European Parliament and the European Commission, but without voting rights.

Zelensky thanked European leaders for their support during the war, but noted that Ukraine serves as a bulwark against Russian aggression for the entire bloc.

"We are defending Europe in full, not partially and not with half-measures. Ukraine deserves a fair approach and equal rights in Europe," Zelensky added.
