Garrison Courts Hand Down Record Number of Prison Sentences in 2025

Russian garrison military courts sentenced a record number of people to real prison terms in 2025. These courts primarily handle cases involving military personnel

In 2025, Russian garrison military courts sentenced 8,274 people to actual prison terms, according to Verstka, which analyzed data from the Judicial Department of the Supreme Court.

This is a record since 2010 (when statistics began to be kept). Previously, the highest figure was in 2024 — 6,838. In total, including non-custodial sentences, decisions were issued against 13,590 people in 2025.

The number of those convicted on criminal charges in garrison courts has been rising almost every year since the start of the “SMO.” In 2022, the first year of the invasion of Ukraine, garrison courts issued verdicts (including imprisonment and other rulings) against 4,191 people.

In 2023, there were 7,779, meaning that in 2024 the number of convicted increased by 76%. In 2024, it sharply rose 1.8 times — to 13,699. Last year, the number changed only slightly.

Before the war, the highest figure was recorded in 2010 — 8,632. In 2011, garrison courts issued verdicts against 7,059 people. From 2016 to 2022, the number of convicted did not exceed 4,830.
