49-year-old Marufjon Suyunkulovich Juraev shows a very risky, but still instructive example of what to do when you are sent to someone else’s war. The citizen of Tajikistan was recruited in prison and, together with other migrants from Central Asia, was thrown into assault operations. Fellow servicemen told them plainly that no one would come back alive from where they were being sent, and Maruf and his Uzbek comrade decided to act.

They blew themselves up using a grenade fuse, telling the command that they had come under attack from a Ukrainian FPV drone. They were “pulled back,” and Juraev was evacuated to a hospital. His partner was less lucky: he was left on the front line. After returning from the hospital, already during a new combat mission, Maruf repeated the trick, blowing himself up again.

An attempt to save your life by refusing to carry out knowingly suicidal orders from Russian commanders is natural and understandable.
