Macron spoke by phone with Lukashenko for the first time in four years

The conversation took place at the initiative of the French side, Lukashenko’s press service said. The sides discussed “regional issues and Belarus’s relations with the EU and France in particular.”

The last time Macron spoke with Lukashenko was on February 26, 2022, a few days after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. At the time, the French president wrote that he had “asked Alexander Lukashenko to secure the withdrawal of Russian troops from his country’s territory” and that Belarus must not become “a de facto accomplice of Russia in the war against Ukraine.”

Today’s call came after Russia struck Ukrainian territory with the “Oreshnik.” Macron said that France “condemns this attack and the use of the ‘Oreshnik’ ballistic missile, which above all testifies to an attempt at further escalation and to the dead end of the war of aggression.”
