Federal TV channels did not report on Zvyagintsev’s film winning the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival

Before Andrey Zvyagintsev’s film “Minotaur” was awarded the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, only one Russian director had ever received the festival’s second most important prize (after the Palme d’Or): Nikita Mikhalkov in 1994.

But the federal TV channels chose not to report on the festival’s results because, while accepting the award, Zvyagintsev delivered a harsh anti-war speech. This was reported by Agentstvo.

🔹In Sunday morning news broadcasts, neither Channel One, nor Rossiya 1, nor NTV reported that “Minotaur” had won the Grand Prix. They also did not mention it in their Saturday evening news broadcasts.

🔹State-run and censored agencies and online media did report on Zvyagintsev’s film receiving the award. However, they chose not to mention the director’s anti-war remarks after the ceremony. Forbes was the exception, but even it limited itself to a single sentence, writing that “in his acceptance speech, Zvyagintsev addressed Russian President Vladimir Putin in connection with the situation in Ukraine.”
