Putin signed a law allowing the military to be used to protect Russians arrested abroad

Putin signed a law that allows the use of the Russian army to protect Russians in the event of their arrest, and of their being subjected to "criminal and other prosecution by courts of foreign states."

Under the law, military personnel may be deployed to protect Russians from prosecution by "foreign and international courts vested with powers without Russia's participation," TASS writes.

The document is due to enter into force ten days after its publication.

🔵The State Duma passed this law on May 13; there were no deputies who abstained or voted against it. In the opinion of human rights advocates, the new measure is more likely to be "unworkable, but threatening."
