Police officers in Yessentuki beat a British man who was detained for “looking suspicious.” After he filed a complaint, the Investigative Committee advised him to leave Russia as soon as possible

The incident happened back in the spring, when 36-year-old British citizen Dzmitryu Smatrytski came to Yessentuki for his grandmother’s funeral. He himself told Mediazona about what happened.

According to the man, officers approached him right on the street and demanded his documents, and when he refused to get into the car, they hit him in the stomach and head. Smatrytski was taken to the city Interior Ministry department, where, he says, the beating continued: he was thrown to the floor, kicked, and they jumped on his head.

They shouted that I was a TCC officer. In the office they stripped me naked and checked whether I had tattoos on my body,

the Briton said.

When his mother called the police, Smatrytski claims they demanded 300,000 rubles from her because her son had “attacked” the officers.

The Investigative Committee accepted his complaint, but later an investigator, according to the Briton, said that the CCTV cameras in the police department had not been working that day and advised him to leave Russia as soon as possible.
