Russian Telegram channels have lost nearly half their audience in recent months

The decline in Telegram reach in Russia, after slowing in late April and the first half of May, accelerated again last week, according to data from the Telemetr service, writes Agentstvo.

🔹By the end of spring, the total number of views of posts per week in the Russian segment of Telegram had fallen by 47% compared with the average in the weeks before the blocking. And the reach of the 100 largest news channels in the first 24 days of May was 58% lower than in the same period last year.

🔹In the week from May 18 to 24, posts in the Russian segment of Telegram gained 18.4 billion views. Before that, for five weeks, the total reach of Russian-language posts had been between 21.1 and 22.7 billion views. The average number of views in the weeks before the blocking (from February 2 to March 22) was 34.8 billion.

🔹Thus, by the end of last week, the decline in reach was 47% compared with the average before the blocking, while from May 4 to 10 and from May 11 to 17 it was 36%, and from April 13 to 19 it was 34.8%. In the week from April 27 to May 3, the decline was 39% (the largest decline before last week).

🔹This year, the drop in views will probably continue in June as well, and then stabilize by the middle of summer, Telemetr suggests.
