War through the eyes of Meduza’s readers. Today we are publishing a letter from Margarita from Moscow
Before, when I read stories about how people stopped talking to loved ones because of different views, I was always glad that wasn’t about me. I have a sane circle around me, and there was always someone I could discuss all this ongoing horror with.
But recently my mother, who had always held anti-war views, sent my brother to a job interview at a company that manufactures drones. She felt no dissonance about it at all.
She thinks it’s an ordinary job, and you have to start somewhere, because after all he’s already been sitting at home for a year after university. If you don’t think about how the results of your work are used, then you can live with it just fine.
My brother has a psychiatric diagnosis, so I have fewer questions for him, but I still have some.
I’m horrified. I don’t know how to go on living with this thought or how to talk to my loved ones anymore. I told my mother that I’m cutting off contact for a while. Maybe Ukrainians are right to hate us.
