On the night of May 22, Ukrainian troops struck Starobilsk in the annexed LNR with drones. The pedagogical college and the vocational college of Luhansk Pedagogical University came under fire.

According to official Russian data, at the time of the attack about 80 students from that college, as well as from the Starobilsk vocational college, were in the dormitory located in the same building — when an air raid alert is announced in the city, students from both institutions shelter in the basement of the pedagogical college.

As a result of the AFU drone attack, 21 people were killed and many were injured.

The independent journalists' cooperative Bereg spoke with classmates and friends of several of the students who were killed.
