The EU court for the third time refused to lift sanctions against Abramovich

The General Court of the EU today dismissed a lawsuit by Russian businessman Roman Abramovich, who had demanded the annulment of the Council of the European Union's sanctions decisions and compensation for moral damages.

Abramovich challenged EU Council acts from March and September 2025, which successively extended the freezing of his funds, as well as the ban on entry into and transit through EU territory, first until September 15, 2025, and then until March 15, 2026.

The court found the criteria for including the businessman on the sanctions list to be objective, sufficiently precise, and proportionate. The court pointed out that Abramovich is the majority shareholder of the parent company of Evraz — one of Russia's largest groups in the metallurgy and mining industries — and owns shares in Nornickel. According to the court's assessment, these sectors bring significant revenues to the Russian state.

🔵This is already Abramovich's third rejected lawsuit against EU sanctions. Previous decisions on his complaints were issued in December 2023 and September 2025. Abramovich has been under EU sanctions since March 2022.
