Ilya Anatolyevich Amelin, 09.06.1994, a serviceman of the 380th Motorized Rifle Regiment, military unit 11141 of the 47th Tank Division, shared his experience of being “in the pit.” In his regiment, every self-respecting officer has a pit. In his case, a petty errand boy from the military police sent people to the pit, beating them a bit beforehand. Wounded servicemen ended up in the pit together with Amelin as well, which especially outrages Ilya. Although by Russian army standards, this is still considered a mild regime, because the alternative is an assault as part of the “duck regiment.”

Amelin is neither the first nor the last to go through the pit. Without the pit, there will be no Russian army. Because the pit is the ideal model of Putin’s system itself: lawlessness, humiliation, fear, and a wooden lid on top.
