Russia summoned its ambassador from Armenia to Moscow for consultations over Yerevan’s rapprochement with the EU

This is stated in a notice from the Russian Foreign Ministry.

“Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Armenia S. P. Kopyrkin has been summoned to Moscow for consultations in connection with steps by the Armenian leadership toward rapprochement with the European Union that are harming cooperation within the EAEU,” it says.

🔵The deterioration in relations between Moscow and Yerevan began after the signing of the law launching the process of Armenia’s accession to the European Union and the holding in the capital of the European Political Community summit in spring 2026. Among its participants, in particular, were the leaders of most European countries and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

🔵Armenia also froze the country’s membership in the CSTO back in 2024.

🔵Despite the fact that Armenia remains in the EAEU, Russia imposed a ban on imports from the country of certain types of flowers, vegetables, fruits, the mineral water “Jermuk” and a number of other goods. In addition, Moscow threatened to suspend or denounce the agreement on supplies of gas, petroleum products, and diamonds if Yerevan continues to pursue a course toward joining the European Union.

🔵Following a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Kazakhstan in May 2026, Vladimir Putin, Alexander Lukashenko, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov signed a joint statement saying there is “a need to hold in Armenia, within the shortest possible time, a nationwide referendum on joining the European Union or remaining within the Eurasian Economic Union.”
