To fight aging, Kremlin scientists are studying 3D printing of living tissues and growing human organs inside decorative pigs — WSJ

As part of Putin’s

6 billion strategy to increase life expectancy, Kremlin scientists have focused on two key technologies, the article says in The Wall Street Journal.

These are bioprinting (3D printing of living tissues) and xenotransplantation, that is, growing human organs inside minipigs, a breed of decorative pigs.

Russian scientists claim they have already managed to print human cartilage tissue and a mouse thyroid gland. The WSJ writes that the scientists’ goal is to make human organ replacement possible by 2030. Roughly the same time frame is reportedly being discussed for the technology for growing organs inside minipigs.

The article says that the life-extension project is headed by Putin’s daughter Maria Vorontsova and Kurchatov Institute chief Mikhail Kovalchuk.

The WSJ writes that, unlike similar research funded by Western tech entrepreneurs, the work of Russian scientists is scarcely described in peer-reviewed scientific publications of leading international journals.
