The Russian state calls protecting children one of its top priorities, but does not shield them from violence — Vyorstka special project

On International Children's Day, Vyorstka is publishing a special project about how people are tried in Russia for violence against children.

In a joint study with scholars from the University of Helsinki, we analyzed nearly 6,000 court rulings. Here is what we found:

💜Home is the main place where violence against children is committed in Russia.

💜71% of those convicted of violence against minors are men.

💜Children are more often subjected to sophisticated violence by those closest to them than by strangers.

💜The most common punishment for beating a child in Russia is 5,000 rubles.

💜Every third case involving infliction of moderate bodily harm on a child or threats to kill them was terminated in court.
