War Through the Eyes of Meduza’s Readers. Today’s letter is from Anastasia in Germany
“I have always been against the war, I was involved in activism, and I left Russia because of the risk of political persecution. My family stayed there.
My attitude toward the war has not changed and is not changing. War is a terrible tragedy for all the countries involved in it. It seems that we all read a great many books about what war is and what horrors it brings, but then forgot. And now we are remembering, but at the cost of living through these events ourselves.
From the very start of the full-scale invasion, I was scared, I was horrified that in the 21st century someone could decide to start killing people en masse in another country, sending their own citizens into meat-wave assaults. And it was practically obvious that in a situation like this there would be no “ours” and “theirs.” That those who make the decisions would frankly not give a damn that one day explosions would be happening anywhere in Russia. Because they are up there, at the top. And they have the resources to hide and wait things out somewhere safe, while the people who did not choose this elite and this president will be left to face the consequences of a war they did not start. People who simply wanted to live their quiet lives.
I am still scared and still horrified. And I am furious too. And it hurts me that Putin and his entourage lack even the most basic notions of humanism and the value of every human life. They keep sacrificing the safety of people in their own country by continuing their criminal military aggression against Ukraine for... what?”
