Russian cinema lacks enough quality control from the state, Vladimir Medinsky, an aide to the Russian president and former culture minister, said in an interview with Ekspert magazine.

In his view, there is currently too much state money and too few market mechanisms in the film industry, which is why “the industry is stuck between socialism and capitalism.”

“As a result, we have a pile of mediocre film products. The state wants what is best. But it cannot keep track of quality. And control should be at all stages: idea, script, filming, implementation,” Medinsky said.

He added that Soviet censorship bodies monitored not only ideological deviations, but also product quality. In Medinsky’s opinion, the same principle should be followed now.

“I do not idealize Soviet censorship, but it had undeniable artistic benefits: they did not let hackwork reach distribution. Made a piece of junk, redo it,” he said.
