Altai activist Aruna Arna has been sentenced to five years on charges of calling for terrorism. She protested Governor Andrey Turchak’s policies

That Aruna Arna was sentenced to five years in a penal colony is reported by Mediazona.

The case against the activist was opened in September 2025. The reason, as Arna herself said in court, was that she had posted two revolutionary anthems on her personal Telegram channel: “The Varshavyanka” and “The Internationale.”

In the summer of 2025, the Altai Republic saw the largest protests in decades, against new governor Andrey Turchak and against local self-government reform. Aruna Arna was one of the leaders of those protests. She has three children who remain at liberty.
