Before the war, Yelena Nishanova, a mother of many children from Hola Prystan, baked custom cakes, while Yelena Kosenko ran a small tourist lodge. After the Russian occupation began, security forces abducted them, and a year later their families learned that the women were being held in the so-called Pretrial Detention Center No. 1 in occupied Chonhar.

There, Russian authorities have been illegally holding civilian prisoners for years.

💬 “They told [Yelena Kosenko]: if she didn’t confess to it, they would bring her husband and son to the basement and rape them in every hole,” an acquaintance of the prisoner told Vot Tak.

The women had known one of the “detention center” employees since childhood — Nishanova had been his kindergarten teacher. Both women confessed to “crimes” against Russia after torture.
