Putin proposed that federal universities open an independent Russian language faculty. He said this during the Council for the Implementation of State Policy in the Sphere of Support for the Russian Language and the Peoples of Russia.

“At many of our higher education institutions, the Russian language and literature do not have a separate faculty. Russian philology, German, English, all of them, moreover on equal terms, are included in a single philology faculty. And this obviously runs counter to the idea of the Russian language as one of the key values, as one of the key values of modern Russia,” Putin said.

Also, in his view, the number of hours devoted to studying the Russian language and literature in elementary school should be increased.
