Rubio says there is “evidence” that Moscow wants Pashinyan to lose the election because of Armenia’s growing ties with the U.S.

“The Russians are not very happy with our engagement with Armenia. I think there is evidence that they would like the current president (meaning Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan — ed. note) to lose the election as a result of these growing relations with the United States,” the U.S. secretary of state said.

🔵The deterioration in relations between Moscow and Yerevan began after the signing of the law launching the process of Armenia’s accession to the European Union and the holding in the capital of the European Political Community summit in spring 2026. Among its participants, in particular, were the leaders of most European countries and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

🔵Armenia also froze the country’s CSTO membership back in 2024.

🔵Despite the fact that Armenia remains in the EAEU, Russia imposed a ban on imports from the country of certain types of flowers, vegetables, fruits, “Jermuk” mineral water, and a number of other goods. In addition, Moscow threatened to suspend or terminate the agreement on supplies of gas, petroleum products, and diamonds if Yerevan continues to pursue a course toward joining the European Union.
