Trump intends to sign a bill imposing harsh sanctions against Russia — WSJ and FT

Sources in the White House told The Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times about this.

The day before, the U.S. House of Representatives approved Lindsey Graham’s bill on harsh sanctions against Russia and sent it to the U.S. president.

But even if the bill becomes law, that does not mean all the restrictions it provides for will be applied automatically, Igor Slabykh, an expert on the U.S. legal and tax system, told The Insider.

According to him, Trump has significant leverage over tariffs on Russian goods and on goods from foreign countries that actively buy Russian oil.

For the latter category, the law provides for tariffs of up to 100%, but that wording could mean 0.1% or 99%. So a great deal will depend on the specific decisions President Trump makes,

the expert believes.
