Two-time Olympic biathlon champion Sergey Chepikov has died

He was 59. Chepikov’s death was announced by Sergey Averyanov, a representative of the Russian Biathlon Union.

At the 1988 Olympics, Chepikov won gold in the relay, and at the 1994 Games, in the sprint. Chepikov was also a two-time world champion: in the team race in 1989 and in the mixed relay in 2006. In 1994, at the Olympic Games in Lillehammer, he was the flag bearer for the Russian team.

Chepikov joined United Russia back in 2006, and in 2011 he was elected a deputy of the Legislative Assembly of Sverdlovsk Region. Since 2016, he had been a State Duma deputy. After the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, he was placed under sanctions by the European Union, the United States, and other countries.
