Germany fails to win a UN Security Council seat for the first time. The country’s Foreign Ministry believes Russia turned other countries against Germany

Germany failed to secure a seat as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the first time; previously, the country had been part of it six times.

In the results of the secret ballot in the UN General Assembly, Germany was overtaken by Portugal and Austria, Deutsche Welle writes.

The UN Security Council consists of five permanent members with veto power: the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, and France. It also includes ten non-permanent members, half of whom are re-elected each year for a new two-year term.

Along with Portugal and Austria, Zimbabwe and Trinidad and Tobago were also elected.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said that Russia had been turning other countries against Germany, Reuters writes. “There is our firm support for Ukraine. Russia does not want to see such a voice on the Security Council,” the minister said.

Wadephul believes Germany may also have lost some votes because of its support for Israel after the Hamas militant attack in October 2023.
