Chechen police given quotas for sending residents to war

The Chechen authorities have required district police departments to find 25 to 50 residents every month who can be forced to sign a contract with the Defense Ministry.

Those detained are held in two holding centers and then sent to the front without training, writes Novaya Gazeta Europe.

According to NIYCO, police department heads and their supervisors are in a closed WhatsApp group where they report the number of detainees. People who are caught can be “resold” to other precincts so those precincts can meet their quotas. Department chiefs who fail to meet the quota are fined.

A fight, tinted car windows, lack of insurance, “hair that is too long,” or a well-groomed beard can all serve as grounds for detention and coercion into signing a contract.

Residents are threatened with being sent to war over utility debts and overdue debts at grocery stores. People are also sent to war if subscriptions to opposition Chechen bloggers, posts criticizing the authorities, or “political” likes are found on their phones.
